Aberrant Forms

Three interesting species of endothermic "frogs", Order Ranamonarcha, native to the coastal spire fields of Timoria on the northeast Servallian subcontinent.

Gannet's Goldbreasted Frogatebird (top left) is a small, pelagic hunter of fishes and similar creatures and returns to shore only to breed. The throat pouch is used not only to collect fish, but also, as with other frogs, to hold air while males sing to court mates in the spring.

The Azure Bolt-tongued Frogate is a pelican-sized fishing animal of a more permanently coastal range, which hunts its aquatic prey with a spring-loaded tongue tipped in a series of keratinous barbed hooks to skewer and bring prey right to the toothy beak, to be swallowed whole.

The Pygmy Pastel Ranatee is the smallest of a normally very large family of marine hoptoads. Having lost their forelimbs in past terrestrial niches and taken to the water only within the last 9 million years, this species uses its elongated upper front teeth to pry shellfish from their holdfasts and crack them open. Being so small, they are occasionally taken by prey by their very own distant relatives which, granted, they don't closely resemble, being united in their order (along with froglemurs and vipernecks) only by endothermy, live-birth, and the presence of (in their case sparse) fur covering upon the impermeable skin of the body.
