Description

Zucchini bears today exist in two races, Servallian and Aenvarnan, and exist in entirely different sorts of environments many thousands of miles apart - but of course this wasn't always the case, and before 11,000 years ago only a single race of the creatures, which was probably fairly alike the modern Aenvarnan race in appearance and habit, existed. It's known that the species originated in the southern rainforest, and that therefore the northern race, now isolated, would have had at some point to cross a substantial width of open ocean to reach just the tip of East Servallia, let alone the northern grasslands where many now dwell. Many theories have been put forth to explain this passage, which at the sea's narrowest is still close to 1,500 miles in length.

It's possible that even 11,000 years ago the sargassum mats which covered many equatorial seas in ancient, warmer times were still present in Eastern Aenvarna and that it was upon detached masses of this material that the first brave explorers made their journey, but this is considered unlikely given archaeological evidence showing a much more ancient decline in this organism's range. Other archaeologists speculate that Servallia's bears probably crossed upon simple boats, and in this more likely scenario, the bears probably were not even going blindly out to sea like so many human explorers must have in our own days past - they probably were following birds. Observing the numerous migratory swiftlets and kin which alight in flocks and vanish out over the sea each spring only to return without fail to the southern grasslands in the autumn, these early bears could probably quite easily determine that there was likely land across the seemingly unending expanse of blue water. Following the complete domestication of the Dwarf (or Green-throated) Prairie Swiflet - a medium-sized, flocking species - it is even entirely possible that some zucchini bears made the trip across the water upon the very backs of their companion animals. However they reached the northern subcontinent, they found a land harsh but rich with resources, aided by not only their innate wit and adaptability, but a long-lasting and now long interwoven co-evolution with perhaps the most versatile of any domestic animal, a mount on land or air, an excellent hunter, protector, and close friend to boot. The northern zucchini bear's existence has been forever shaped in part by their most beloved companions, the domestic Dwarf Swiftlets of Servallia. Elsewhere many other species in the Grallatacheiropteryx genus are tamed and kept as novel companions, but none otherwise so far has reached a true level of domestication and such a vital importance to any culture as the great, piebald sky-birds of the central lands...

Pictured are two individuals of Grallatacheiropteryx familiaris, the domestic swiftlet, reigned and saddled in a versatile two-reigns, specially-constructed folding saddle system which can quickly be altered for control of the animal on land (when the talon reigns are used) and in air (when wing-reigns are used). Alsopictured is an unsaddled and almost wholly white individual, showing the extreme variation in body color exhibited in this species.
